Clementi Road was previously known as "reformatory road" as a boys' home was previously located there. In 1947 it was renamed Clementi after Sir Cecil Clementi Smith , a governor of the Straits Settlements and High Commissioner from 1887 to 1893. He was an accomplished chinese scholar who set laws to control secret societies. He left Singapore in 1893.
Most of the present Clementi New Town area was used to be "Colombo Camp" which was disbanded in 1971.
Clementi Avenue 1 used to be the "sussex estate " named after the historic country Sussex in England. Back in 1950s , the families of British non-commissioned officers stay here. The Sussex Estate was demolised in 1997.
